Week 3: Robotics + Art

Industrialization is a form of change and society does not deal with change very well. While technological advances are praised by some, there are others that see these advances as a bad thing. When robots are created or updated, there is a section of society that believes that robots and artificial life are one step closer to taking over the world.

With film and television, this fear of artificial intelligence has only increased for some people.  Walter Benjamin points out the impact film has on society in his writing. When films first started being created, they were looked at a lot differently than they are now. Now, movies play a large role in most people's lives. One movie that comes to mind when talking about artificial intelligence is I, Robot.

In this movie, robots evolved and tried to take over humans. While it was a great movie, it increased the number of people that are afraid of artificial intelligence. Many fears are created because of movies and videos,l and with the creation of a movie like I, Robot, fears were created and/or intensified.

On the other hand, we have people that see robots and industrialization as inevitable. Rodney Brooks points this out in his Tedtalk. Robots and artificial intelligence becoming more important in the world is happening and will continue to happen as artificial intelligence and robots get more technologically advanced. With these advances, there will always be those that accept them, and those that will be afraid because they do not like change or the unknown.

  1. Hi I found your blog post very relatable. I watched "I, Robot" as a kid and have had a fear of advanced A.I. ever since. While of course this idea is sensationalized by Hollywood, it is not one that is completely absurd. The guest speaker from this week even responded to a question about this very subject and said that we should be careful when developing an A.I. that could have the capability to do something dangerous to humans. While I agree that there are some that have irrational fears of this technology, I don't think that all people who are weary of its possible outcomes should be considered ignorant.

  2. Hi I love the YouTube clip you incorporated into your Blog post I found it very insightful. Although I have not seen the film "I,Robot" Theres so many films out about advanced A.I. and how powerful they are it truly is scary. I watched one film about how the FBI has all these robots stored away and just seeing all the things these robots were capable of is amazing but freighting. All though it was just a movie I do think this could be possibly true. To know that we could potentially be replaced as robots in the future is alarming.
